Discobelle.net and DJ Neoteric present… THE MYSTERY MIX!

What happens when you unleash a MONSTER of a mixtape, filled with unreleased tracks from many of the biggest names and labels in the game, and a few unknown future stars? Generally everyone hits Google in a frenzied attempt to track down the whole playlist. But, what if one had to do more work to find out just what these tracks were? Welcome to The Mystery Mix, an internet scavenger hunt for music fiends!
The hunt for the tracklist of The Mystery Mix starts today and continues until the puzzle is solved. Over time, we will be revealing clues to help listeners figure out the tracklisting. For example, we may twitter a YouTube clip of one of the songs being played live, or drop a hint within a blog post on Discobelle. You may find a mention about a song in question on the website of one of the labels involved, or have to go digging around MySpace or Facebook to find the answer you’re looking for!
As fun as this is for any die hard music fan, we’ve got to reward you for all your hard work, so we have put together a massive prize pack for the winner! We have a $100 gift certificate from the fine folks at Mishka NYC, and a brand new Sony Ericsson W995 cell phone, courtesy of Sony Ericsson!!

(more photos at prefixmag.com)

This past Saturday, Basement Jaxx played at Santos Party House to celebrate the FIXED 5 year Anniversary. Although just a DJ set, this was the first time I had ever seen them in person. We rolled to the venue around 12:30am and already could see a thick line developing from Canal and Lafayette. Presales were sold out and there was still a long line for both the guest list and general admission.

Fixed is responsible for bringing a slew of great fresh and veteran import talent including Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco, Annie Mac & Little Boots to name a few. Made up of Dave P & JDH, the pair has played for with great talent and staple clubs all over North America.

The crowd was a good mixture of guys and girls just wanting to have a great time. The weather was awesome and it seemed like the whole city was there on Saturday. The sound system was defiantly not a problem. There was a point in time that we had to make earplugs out of the bar napkins cause the bass was so heavy.

As you walked in, you can feel the heat hit your face and once you went to the other side of the red curtain doors you can see hands up and bodies shaking. The best part of the night is when the vocalist busted out on stage right when Basement Jaxx dropped their ultimate 1999 single Red Alert halfway through the set. You can watch the official Red Alert video here.

Later on in the night, there was some CDJ difficulty switching form one side to the other where there could have been some dead silence. The vocalists/MC saved the night, kept the energy and crowd participation up for nearly 2-3 mins, which was amazing! Over all the duo played a wide range of club tracks from Dubstep, Techno, House and even the Pon di floor Major Lazer track. Basement Jaxx would take the night up and take it down to keep everyone going. You were not only there to see Basement Jaxx but to be part of a great party. I had never seen people or sweated that much in a long time. By the end of the night, everyone was drenched. As nasty as it sounds, you didn’t really care cause it was Basement Jaxx.

Methods and the False Aristocracy crews are teaming up to bring you Starkey. If you can remember Unit. One brought him to Dallas in 2007 for DJ Select’s Birthday Celebration and again to NYC at the Knitting Factory in 2008 with Akala & Star Eyes. You can actually download the live recording of the dallas set here. We also did an Audio Interview with him and Dev79 here.

Starkey is co-owner of Slit Jockey Records and a member of the Seclusiasis and TROUBLE AND BASS crews. Following his recent success stateside, Starkey was selected by Vex’d as one of seven new DJs for Radio 1’s MARY ANNE HOBBS’ low end special ‘Generation Bass’ and was the only non-UK DJ to be chosen. If you like grime, dubstep, hip hop and all things bass then Starkey’s hard edged spaced out street bass is the sound for you.

Starkey’s first full-length album “Ephemeral Exhibits” was released late 2008 on the seminal Planet Mu label. It has received rave reviews around the globe, with the Wire saying “Ephemeral Exhibits is compressed into mid-range blasts of yowling, plastic synth lines over peg-legged stutter-beats. (Starkey) has allowed (himself) to see the forest for the trees, and locate (his) place within a tangled history of electronic dance music.” And NME wrote, “(Starkey’s) tracks sparkle with sonic wit and real tenderness. His Stateside ‘street bass’ sound is a bright neon beacon of hope.”

Over the past five years, Starkey has had a string of vinyl, cd and digital releases on labels such as Peace-Off/Ruff (France), Keysound (UK), Nonclassical (UK), Dead Homies (US), Starksound/Rag&Bone (UK), Offshore (US) and LoDubs (US), Creative Space (Greece) and Dress 2 Sweat (UK). In 2009, Starkey and MOVES!!! tracks appeared on Mary Anne Hobbs’ “Wild Angels” compilation, the “LA Dubstep” mix and Modeselektor’s “Get Physical” mix cd.

<songkicklovesmypostcontent>
These are Powers, Growing and Fuckbuttons performed at Bowery Ballroom in New York a few days ago. Hearing about the show from a newly acquainted friend, I thought, “why not?” I had heard of all these bands, but never had the interest to research. I would rather just attend a show and see what comes of it. I feel you can never go to a bad performance in the art world. One should see each performance a gain or influence on your own piece of art.

these-are-powers-life-of-birds.mp3

I had known of These are Powers since I first moved to NYC but did not know much about them. They have a little buzz around the brooklyn music scene and I just noticed from their myspace that Windish Agency does their booking and their publicity is done by Biz 3 Publicity out of Chicago. Both companies are heavy hitters in the indie music world.

These are Powers’ performance was high energy and unique. Their sound seemed influenced by a lot of old traditions and new sounds coming out at the moment. At one time, the lead vocalist, in a way was spitting rhymes and/or spoken word lyrics over a Baltimore Club style beat. Other songs had heavy 4 x 4 beat patterns that seamed almost like hard house. I noticed that the kick drums and sub bass were hitting really hard but not overbearing. Overall the performance was a great! A friend of mine who came with us, said it was probably one of the best performances they had and all the other times they pushed the sound system to hard or had technical difficulties.

growing-emseepee.mp3

Growing was a band that I had never heard of before. Most of their releases have been signed to Social Registry, who also released artists like Gang Gang Dance, Psychic Ills and Jah Division. Rumor has it that they recently got picked up by Vice Records. Out of all the bands on the line up, Growing really stuck out. The three piece seemed very timid and uninteresting to some, but to me they were performers playing their music to a crowd of mixed music backgrounds. A more noise sound type of music to indie hip rockers, they seemed more in touch with an IDM crowd. Like These are Powers, their influenced seemed taken from Hard House or Gabber with experimental 4 to the floor drum kicks from pysch rock. Their performance over all took their show up and down. I am excited to see what is to come of them after their first release on Vice Records.

I had heard about Fuckbuttons about two years ago and people have said their live performance was incredible. Finally, I get a chance to check them out live at one of the best NYC venues. Coming from the UK, I was not very impressed. Maybe they caught me on a bad day, but their droning, repetitive, mid range sound was making me drowsy. I would say probably say the only best thing about their performance was their abrupt stop, which was a great ending after a non-stop set of hi pitch sequencers and head banging. I will probably see them again, but probably not pay to see them again.

The show was a great lineup for a monday night in NYC. It started at the right time and ended before midnight so everyone could get some decent sleep and go to work the next day. I would say watch out for These are Powers and Growing. Fuckbuttons will keep on doing what they do and gain new or loose fans.

This month’s Trash In the Bassment mix features exciting work from producers like NGUZUNGUZU, out of L.A., and more from the complicated realm of Dubstep and 2-step, including genre-busting material from Zomby and Floating Points. These mixes are all done live, and feature songs released in the month they are done in. Songs available for free are linked to the blogs he downloaded from, hopefully point readers in new directions, as well as honor the work of other writers/DJ’s/musicians.

In other news: Crooked Clef will be in New York City next week playing a party on September 10th entitled “Ether,” at a club called Happy Ending. I will also be up at Bard College on September 12th playing their infamous monthly party called “The Remedy.” Former guests include, Ghislain Poirier, Math Head & Star Eyes, and DJ/Rupture.

A direct link to the mix and the original blog post are available below, as well as a tracklist.
